Dr Costantino Oliva from the Institute of Digital Games served as advisor for the arts-based research project "GAPPP: Gamified Audiovisual Performance and Performance Practice", at the University of Music and Performing Arts of Graz, Austria.
As part of the project, Dr Oliva participated in a symposium, delivering an academic response in the form of a lecture, which commented on an artistic proposal by Prof. Rob Hamilton from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA. The symposium brought together an international mix of artists, performers and speakers from the fields of game philosophy, game theory, audiovisual art, and musicology, and presented the most significant outcomes of the research project in the form of talks and artistic performances.
The GAPPP project explores computer game elements in the realm of audiovisual composition and performance. This research starts out with the assumption that player interactions and game strategies offer yet unexplored models that can be applied in live audiovisual works. Game-interaction – and the doubling of the player in the game in a virtual space – offer a large potential to create a liveness quality of a novel kind. This does not only concern the performer who is interacting with a responsive audiovisual system but can also engage an audience as “backseat-players”. This artistic research project therefore sets out to explore the combination of game strategies and performer interactions for its artistic potential beyond the mere imitation of computer games.
GAPPP is funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF and is located at the IEM – Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in Austria.
